Fat Kid
We have a dilemma: It's Noah's birthday in a couple of weeks and we're organising his party: a Doctor Who party. I've knocked together invites and Noah addressed them all yesterday. He was very focussed and industrious. Only problem is, he doesn't want to invite one boy from his class. Just one. At first, we thought he was one of a few; Noah said there were others, but he couldn't name any and on further interrogation we ascertained the truth: it was just one. The fat kid.
Now Noah isn't weightist; I'm sure of that. And, I've met the kid (we'll call him Kid "F"). Kid "F" isn't that nice. He was at Noah's besty's party a few weeks back and even before I'd worked out who he actually was I'd concluded he wasn't a very nice kid. Bombastic, greedy, pushy.
So on one hand, I can't blame him for not liking Kid "F" but on the other hand, Kid "F" is someone's son and if he were mine, I'd be sad to learn he was the only boy not invited to someone's party.
We, very carefully, attempted to persuade Noah to invite Kid "F" regardless. Tactics included: "How would you feel", "Your besty invited him", "What would Jesus do?", "It's not fair" and finally, "It'll mean another present". I thought the last one had worked and made to leave the room but when I turned to look back, Noah was in tears. He was really upset. He definitely didn't was Kid "F" at his party. Not even if it meant another present!
We relented.
But now, after dropping Noah at school I'm wondering if we handled it all in the best way. Should we have made him invite Kid "F"? Is there something else going on we should investigate? Even if Kid "F" is a git, will this just encourage his future git-ness? Is this how anti-social behaviour starts? In 10-15 years time will we be reading about Man "F"'s arrest?
