Walkie talkies as listeners?

I have a gadget conundrum. I tried walkie talkies as baby listeners a few years ago, but the relationship was short lived. We were still at the nervous stage, and the sound cut in and out every 20 secs, so we couldn't tell if kiddo was revving up or settling down. Now the kids are 5 and 3, we're venturing abroad, to a hotel with no listening service. So I fancy giving it another try. Anyone had success using walkie talkies as baby listeners?
